Lakeland, Florida (August 3, 2026) – Three teenagers were killed following a fatal two-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 98 North in Lakeland, according to the Lakeland Police Department.
The crash occurred shortly before 10:30 p.m. Wednesday on U.S. Highway 98 North in Lakeland. Emergency responders arrived at the scene to provide medical assistance, secure the roadway, and begin investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.
According to investigators, three teenagers were traveling northbound in a car at a high rate of speed when the vehicle collided with a southbound Lincoln pickup truck. Police said the pickup truck entered the designated left-turn lane and attempted to turn left into a plaza located on the east side of the roadway when the collision occurred.
Authorities said all three teenage occupants of the Nissan sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead as a result of the crash. The identity of the victims has not yet been released pending notification of their next of kin.
The driver of the Lincoln pickup truck remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Authorities have not reported any criminal charges, and the circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation.
Officials said additional details may be released as the investigation continues. The crash resulted in significant traffic disruptions along U.S. Highway 98 North while investigators documented the scene and emergency crews cleared the roadway.
In Florida, fatal motor vehicle accidents are investigated to determine whether factors such as excessive speed, failure to yield, distracted driving, impaired driving, roadway conditions, visibility, or other circumstances contributed to the collision. Investigators may review witness statements, vehicle evidence, crash reconstruction findings, surveillance footage, and other available information.
Fatal accident claims may involve questions of liability, insurance coverage, and potential compensation for eligible surviving family members. Depending on the circumstances, damages may include funeral expenses, medical costs, loss of financial support, loss of companionship, and other losses permitted under Florida law.
Florida follows a modified comparative negligence system, allowing eligible claimants to seek compensation if the deceased or injured party is determined to be 50% or less at fault for an incident. Any compensation awarded may be reduced based on the percentage of fault assigned.
