Tampa, Florida (August 11, 2026) – One man died and another person was injured Saturday morning after a boat crashed into a rock jetty near Picnic Island Park in Tampa Bay, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).
The crash occurred at approximately 7 a.m. Saturday near Picnic Island Park. According to authorities, a 27-foot vessel was traveling through Tampa Bay when it struck a rock jetty near the park. The impact caused both people aboard the boat to be thrown into the water.
Emergency responders searched the water following the crash and recovered a 61-year-old man . Authorities said Hochberg was found dead in Tampa Bay and was pronounced deceased following the incident.
The second person aboard the vessel survived the crash and was able to swim to shore. The injured person was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. Authorities have not released additional information about the person’s condition.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating the fatal boat crash. Investigators have not disclosed what caused the vessel to strike the rock jetty or whether factors such as speed, weather conditions, mechanical problems, or other circumstances contributed to the collision.
Fatal boating accidents in Florida may be investigated to determine whether operator negligence, excessive speed, impairment, failure to maintain a proper lookout, unsafe navigation, mechanical problems, weather conditions, or other factors contributed to a collision. Investigators may review witness statements, vessel condition, navigation evidence, photographs, video footage, and other available evidence.
Florida’s Wrongful Death Act specifically provides a cause of action when a person’s death is caused by wrongful conduct or negligence, including circumstances occurring on navigable waters. The statute allows a decedent’s personal representative to pursue a claim for the benefit of eligible survivors and the estate.
Depending on the circumstances, damages in a wrongful death claim may include lost support and services, medical or funeral expenses, loss of earnings, and other damages permitted under Florida law. Eligibility and recoverable damages depend on the relationship of the surviving family members and the specific facts of the case.
Florida also applies comparative fault principles in negligence actions. Under Florida Statutes Section 768.81, contributory fault may reduce damages according to the claimant’s percentage of fault, subject to the statute’s applicable provisions.
This summary is based on publicly available information from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and local news reports. The surviving person’s identity and medical condition have not been included because those details were not publicly disclosed in the available reports. This report is provided for general informational purposes only and should not be considered legal advice or legal solicitation.
