Brooksville, Florida (August 11, 2026) – A 57-year-old Tampa man died after his motorcycle was struck by an SUV driver who allegedly ran a red light Sunday morning in Hernando County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of State Road 50 (Cortez Boulevard) and County Road 581 (Emerson Road) in Brooksville. According to FHP, a Jeep Commander was traveling eastbound on State Road 50 when the driver ran a red light at the intersection.
At the same time, a Harley-Davidson motorcycle was crossing the intersection. The Jeep Commander collided with the motorcycle, and both vehicles caught fire following the impact.
The 57-year-old Tampa man operating the motorcycle was transported to a local hospital for treatment but later died from injuries sustained in the crash, according to authorities.
A 63-year-old woman who was riding as a passenger on the motorcycle was also transported to a hospital with serious injuries. The 45-year-old Brooksville man driving the Jeep Commander was not injured in the collision.
The crash resulted in significant traffic disruptions in the area. Authorities diverted traffic for more than two hours while emergency crews responded to the scene, extinguished the vehicle fires, and investigated the circumstances surrounding the collision.
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
In Florida, serious and fatal motorcycle crashes may be investigated to determine whether factors such as failure to obey a traffic signal, speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, failure to yield, roadway conditions, or other forms of negligence contributed to the collision. Investigators may review witness statements, traffic signals, vehicle damage, photographs, surveillance footage, and crash-reconstruction evidence.
When a motor vehicle collision results in a death caused by negligence or wrongful conduct, eligible surviving family members may have a wrongful death claim under Florida law. Depending on the circumstances, potential damages may include funeral and burial expenses, medical expenses, loss of financial support and services, loss of companionship, and other damages permitted under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act.
Florida follows comparative fault principles in negligence cases. When more than one party is found to have contributed to an accident, compensation may be affected by the percentage of fault assigned to each party. The application of comparative fault depends on the specific facts and legal claims involved.
This summary is based on the information provided regarding the Florida Highway Patrol’s investigation.
