Polk County, Florida (August 2, 2026) – One person was killed following a head-on collision involving a passenger vehicle and a semi-truck in Davenport, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred on U.S. 17/92 near Sunny Acres Road in Davenport, approximately one mile north of Ernie Caldwell Boulevard. Emergency responders arrived at the scene to provide medical assistance, secure the roadway, and begin investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.

According to investigators, a semi-truck was traveling southbound on U.S. 17/92 when the driver observed an oncoming car drifting across the center line multiple times. Authorities said the passenger vehicle eventually crossed completely into the southbound lane and collided head-on with the semi-truck.

The driver of the passenger vehicle suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead following the collision. The semi-truck driver was not reported to have suffered serious injuries.

Investigators with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said evidence and witness statements indicate that distracted driving may have contributed to the crash. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue reviewing the events leading up to the collision.

The crash caused traffic delays in the area while law enforcement officers documented the scene and crews worked to remove the damaged vehicles from the roadway.

General Legal Context for Fatal Truck Accidents in Florida

In Florida, fatal crashes involving commercial trucks are investigated to determine whether factors such as driver distraction, fatigue, speeding, improper lane movement, vehicle maintenance issues, or other safety violations contributed to the collision. Investigators may review witness statements, crash reconstruction evidence, vehicle inspections, electronic data, and roadway conditions.

Truck accident claims can involve multiple parties, including commercial drivers, trucking companies, insurers, and other potentially responsible entities. Determining liability often requires a detailed review of the evidence collected during the investigation.

Florida follows a modified comparative negligence system, allowing injured parties to seek compensation if they are found to be 50% or less at fault for an incident. Depending on the circumstances, eligible parties may seek compensation for medical expenses, lost income, funeral costs, property damage, and other damages available under Florida law.
