Hillsborough County, Florida (August 2, 2026) – One person was killed and another suffered minor injuries following a head-on car accident early Sunday morning on the Courtney Campbell Causeway in Tampa, according to the Tampa Police Department.
The collision occurred shortly before 1:30 a.m. on the Courtney Campbell Causeway near Ben T. Davis Beach. Emergency responders arrived at the scene to provide medical assistance, secure the roadway, and investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
According to the Tampa Police Department, the driver of a Nissan was traveling along the causeway when the vehicle crossed the median and entered the lanes of oncoming traffic for reasons that remain under investigation.
Authorities said the Nissan collided head-on with a Ford Explorer traveling in the opposite direction. The impact caused severe damage to both vehicles and prompted a significant emergency response.
The driver of the Nissan sustained critical injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital, where the individual later died. The driver of the Ford Explorer suffered minor injuries and was also taken to a hospital for evaluation and treatment.
The crash temporarily disrupted traffic along the Courtney Campbell Causeway as law enforcement officers documented the scene and crews removed the damaged vehicles from the roadway.
The Tampa Police Department continues to investigate the cause of the collision. No additional details have been released.
In Florida, fatal motor vehicle crashes are thoroughly investigated to determine the factors that contributed to the collision. Investigators may examine roadway evidence, vehicle damage, witness statements, surveillance footage, toxicology results, and electronic vehicle data to determine whether negligence, distracted driving, impairment, excessive speed, fatigue, or other traffic violations played a role.
Florida follows a modified comparative negligence system, allowing injured parties to seek compensation if they are found to be 50% or less at fault for an incident. Depending on the circumstances, victims and surviving family members may be entitled to recover compensation for medical expenses, lost income, funeral expenses, pain and suffering, and other damages available under Florida law.
When collisions result in fatalities or catastrophic injuries, determining liability often requires a comprehensive review of all available evidence gathered during the investigation.
